I'm a big fan of EastWest, their Hollywood Strings are just a beast in terms of lushness of sound and expression. Just make sure to have a good contract if you plan to sell the music.+1 It's my opinion that recording even a mediocre college student, then editing, de-noising, EQing to fit in the mix and auto-tuning if necessary, often gives more musical and emotionally evocative results than a cleaner-sounding solo string sample. The gist of this sound involves larger ensembles with more processing and layering to make the orchestra sound artificially huge, and the traditional balance and instrument placement is less important.īeware of sampled solo strings- it's very challenging to get them to sound realistic. If you are going for more of a modern trailer music/Zimmer-and-friends sound out of the box, you may want to look at something like Symphobia or Metropolis Ark. Or, at least, as close as they can with samples. They are trying to give you a classic, natural "John Williams" Hollywood sound. One thing I like about the EW Hollywood Orchestra is that each section was recorded in the same place, by the same people, and the samples are pre-panned and balanced so that you basically have a mixed orchestra ready to go out of the box.
